ABOUT FIRST STRIDES

Jr. Inferno First Strides is a fun, positive introductory hockey program for girls aged 4-7 who have limited or no skating experience. (If your daughter is outside this age range and you feel this program would be beneficial for her, please contact firststrides@girlshockeycalgary.com.) This program is designed for girls who are interested in discovering hockey before joining a minor hockey team.

We will introduce skating and hockey skills while incorporating non-competitive activities and small area games. There are no formal hockey games in this program. Full hockey equipment is mandatory.

To offer a fair and consistent development experience, participants in Jr. Inferno First Strides should not be simultaneously registered in a minor hockey program. More experienced skaters should consider GHC's U7 (Timbits) and U9 minor hockey programs. First strides is not a prerequisite for U7 (Timbits).

Try Hockey Event - January 7, 2023

What equipment is required?

Participants will be provided with a program jersey. The following hockey equipment is required:

New To Hockey provides a helpful Equipment Buying Guide for new hockey parents.

You can often source second-hand equipment on local buy & sell sites. Comrie's Sports Equipment Bank in Calgary provides gently used sports equipment for low income families in need.

Can I join my daughter on the ice?

This is an un-parented program. However, GHC is volunteer-based organization, and the success of our programs depends on volunteers. We require parent volunteers who are willing to assist our instructors as on-ice helpers.

Individuals who volunteer as on-ice helpers require the following:

CSA Certified Helmet
Hockey gloves
Skates
Stick

If you would like to volunteer to be an on-ice helper, please indicate this on the registration form. If you have questions, please contact the program coordinator.

Will we play games?

How is First Strides different than U7 (Timbits)?

Our Jr. Inferno First Strides program is an optional development-orientated program for girls who are interested in discovering hockey before joining a minor hockey team.

One hour per week for 16 sessions.
Consistent ice times and rink location.
No formal league games, tournaments or travel.
No fundraising.
